My Joyful Dance

Ballerina girls and one upside down

This is me — the one that’s hanging upside down.  Always the rebel.  My mom always said that I travel to the beat of a different drum, and indeed my life has proven that to be true.

Case in point: I’ve been teaching a specific dance fitness practice for over 19 years. Due to countless reasons that span at least 10 years if not more, I’ve stepped away from that organization.  And I’m now doin’ my own thing…and I’m calling it Joyful Dance.

In 6 months, I’ll be 70 years old…and I’ll be 6 months in to sharing my Joyful Dance. It’s exciting to think about the opportunities and possibilities that are ahead.

Thank you to all my dancing friends who have supported and continue to support my rebellious traveling to a different drum!

Stay tuned for the unfolding journey of Joyful Dance!

Empress.PNG

I think it’s pretty synchronistic that on this day specifically named to honor women, I would pick the Empress for my daily card.  Abundance, nurturing, beauty, maternal, birth — all of these and more are traits of the Empress.

I am a woman, a wife, a sister, a daughter, a dancer, a teacher, a tarot reader, an energy worker, a small business owner.  I am the mother of felines. I have no children by conscious choice. I’ve never regretted that decision. To anyone who would judge me as being less than whole for not going through childbirth I say this: I have given birth and nurtured the growth of countless creative projects, ideas, thoughts and dreams. I have dug my hands into the wet soil of the earth, planted seeds, watered and watched as trees, plants and flowers pushed forth into lush gardens for many to enjoy.

Along with my life partner (my husband and soulmate), I have grown a small business of 10 employees into a successful small corporation with 37 employees.

I honor my Mom who instilled in me a good work ethic. I honor my sisters who paved the way for me to grow up in a loving household.  I honor my girlfriends, past and current, goddesses who continue to offer me compassion and extreme companionship  through thick and thin.

I honor the girl I was, the woman I grew to be and the beautiful essence of feminine power I am today. My love, my earthy, grounded spiritual expression serves as notice to all:

I am Woman.  Hear me roar.

Way Down Deep

My latest accomplishment has been to receive my certification as a Chakradance™ Facilitator.  I cannot express fully enough in words how grateful I am to have had this movement practice for the soul come into my life.  It was quite synchronistic that I found it actually.  I had noticed it several times on my Facebook newsfeed.  I’ve been facilitating meditation classes for quite some time and on most occasions go through the chakras.  When I taught Yoga back along the way, chakras were very much a part of my teaching.  I’ve been teaching Nia for 15 years and movement of the 3 body weights in Nia (the pelvis, chest and head) activate and open the 7 chakras.

I’ve been wanting to expand the offerings at Sacred Space Studio so when I logged on to my email one morning back in April, there was a message from “Jenny” of Chakradance™ letting me know that this day was the last day to register for the Facilitator training at a reduced cost.  All sorts of thoughts when through my head about not having the time or not being sure if this was exactly what I was looking for, yadda yadda yadda.  You know the drill.  But my intuition was much more open and willing than my mind, so I went for it.  And W.O.W. am I ever delighted that I followed my intuition.

The feedback I’ve received from the several one hour and 15 minutes classes I’ve taught has been encouraging and enlightening.  I finished my first of seven Workshops this past Sunday — starting with the Base Chakra — and the feedback from this workshop confirmed even further that I had made the right choice.

Spontaneous dance, specific music, creative visualizations and imagery, along with the wonderful Mandala-creating exercise contained in the classes and the workshops invites the participants to go way down deep.  It’s transformational.  It’s healing.  It’s truly a movement practice for the soul.

It is my pleasure to be offering Nia classes, Reiki classes and therapy sessions, Chakradance™ classes and workshops, Tarot readings and meditation classes at Sacred Space Studio.  If you find yourself compelled toward any of these offerings, please feel free to contact me.  You can find my contact information on the “About” page.

The Spaces Between

Nia brochure pic

I just celebrated my 15th year of teaching Nia!  I’m in the 4th week of Chakradance™ training!  I’m continuing my Tarot Tuesday classes which are so much fun and so insightful!  I’m opening up shop for one-on-one Tarot readings!  I have an abundant Reiki practice!  I’m also the co-owner and bookkeeper for The Nutman Co. USA, Inc., the Really Cool Gift Shop, Java Dancer Coffee Bar and Sacred Space Studio.

But my full time job is living life to my highest vision…being in place to receive what life has to offer — opportunities and challenges that I meet head on and with an open heart.  Focused living.  Focused radiation of love into the world.

I like to set a focus in my mind’s eye for each day after awakening (and after a cup of coffee!).  I didn’t used to do this, but after 15 years of teaching Nia it’s a welcome habit that I enjoy.

Setting a focus before each Nia class is merely one of the things that sets apart this fabulous cardio fitness lifestyle practice from any other on the face of the earth. My focus for this past Saturday’s morning class was “The Spaces Between.”  This could relate to a good many things in life, but I narrowed it down to the spaces between our thoughts and our actions.  There is a SPLIT SECOND between a thought and the choice that follows — to act or not act — and what type of action if that is the choice.

And once an action has been taken there is the need to accept the consequences. There don’t seem to be many consequences in the human world these days with actions taken that cause harm.

There is always the Universe to which we are all accountable.  My mom used to say “what goes around comes around.”  I believe this to be true.

So those spaces between our thoughts and our actions are profoundly important.

I enjoy living and learning.  How about you?

Tarot Tuesday

universe

I had this brainiac idea two years ago to combine my love for Nia and my love for Tarot.  Alas, it was not to be until 2016.

My own Tarot guru (www.thetarotlady.com) did an Entrepreneurcast in 2015 for me. The words I took from her beautiful work for 2015:  Dream, Create, Study, Learn, Inquire and Prepare.

My previous blog post alluded to my tapping into tarot by using a tarot card for each Nia class…well, the Universe had a different plan based on my Entrepreneurcast and my decision to do something more in-depth with Tarot and Nia!  Voila’!!  Tarot Tuesday was born.

Here’s how it goes:  One of my students gives me a question.  I do a tarot reading and then sit with it a bit and the final step before taking it to class is to find music to go with the reading….I call it “dancing the cards.”  The actual reading takes about 15-20 minutes at the beginning of class.  We all gather around enlarged paper copies of the Celtic Cross tarot layout. I do the reading.  In the moment feedback is encouraged and welcomed.  Then I pick up the cards and we dance.

To date, Tarot Tuesday has been well-received and well-attended!!  SUCCESS!!  It was foreseen that this would be the result…a lot of hard work, studying learning, inquiring of the cards and preparing the classes has been absolutely AWESOME.

In case you’re wondering, I use the Chyrsalis tarot deck. It’s a non-traditional tarot deck. It drew me in and speaks quite clearly to me and through me.

Combining Nia and Tarot, my two passions for creative inspiration and expression is nothing less than perfect…I made a decision and the Universe conspired to make it happen.  Not in my time, but in spirit’s.

I am blessed to have a Nia community with open mind and open hearts.  They are all my heroes.

Nia and Tarot

It is what it isSo you might ask what Tarot and Nia have to do with one another.  They are more similar than different actually.  They both move me deeply.  I am guided by spirit when reading Tarot or when dancing Nia. Both require listening to my intuition and sensing in all the realms — physical, emotional, mental and spirit.

My plan is to begin using one Tarot card to guide me in setting the focus and the intent  for each day and if there is a Nia class that day, that same focus will apply to the class.

I’m really excited about how this journey will unfold.  It is What It Is and I’m Going with the Flow.

Reflections class

Tonight is the last Wednesday Nia class in 2015.  I call it my Reflections class.  Normally I would have everyone reflect back on their year. But in this class I’m actually reflecting back on my favorite songs that I taught in my Nia classes in 2015.  There were actually too many songs to fit into an hour class, so I may have to teach 2 classes of my faves of 2015!

If you’re in the mood to dance, find your way to Sacred Space Studio in Hubertus, Wisconsin. If Not Now, When

Moving Energy

This Sunday I’m teaching my first Reiki I class since receiving my Reiki Master Teacher certification. What an honor. I believe I was born to do this; just as I was born to teach Nia. It’s in the stars. Really. Several years ago (more than 25 years!), I worked with an astrologist. My chart indicated that leading groups, energy work (Reiki) and creative arts (Nia) were very strong — this would be my direction in life.

At that time, I worked for a major corporation (from which I retired after 30 years in 1998). I felt I had no room in my life (at least that’s what I thought) for energy work or dance. Amazingly enough, I managed to fit in Reiki I (1986), Reiki II (1997), took Gabrielle Roth’s 7 Rhythms classes (1983 and 1993) and Eurythmy classes (1996) plus every aerobic fitness class available.

It wasn’t until I retired in 1998, moved to Indiana and subsequently to Wisconsin that the direction became apparent. I stepped in to the Nia White Belt Intensive in June of 2001, married my twin flame in July of 2001 and began a journey of consciously moving energy. My Nia practice (13+ years) has been my passion…I love to dance and Nia is conscious movement in the form of a dance exercise fitness fusion. My Nia and Reiki practices are (and have been) a part of the The Nutman Co. USA, Inc. business that my husband and I own.

My Reiki practice did not really take off until recently. I attended two Shamanic Journey workshops in March of 2014. From each of the journeys, I discovered that “Reiki Master” was the direction into which I should move. I found a Reiki Master Teacher close to home…one of my best friends and a Nia compadre! The Reiki Master and Reiki Master Teacher classes were exciting, filled with energy and except for my journey with Nia, was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

So now I get to put into practice my Reiki Master Teacher training. This Sunday, I’m stepping in to moving energy the Reiki way. I am so blessed.

Are you a Reiki practitioner? Have you had a Reiki treatment? Do you teach Nia? Have you taken a Nia class?

If you want to have the movement of energy in your life, these are two premiere modalities for doing so, and natural healing occurs along the way. It might be a cliche’ but “try it, you’ll like it!”

Gratitude in ALL Things

Image

I recently offered a Mindful Meditation class. Part of the class was geared toward identifying and acknowledging the inner voice of criticism. My invitation to the students was to avoid the temptation to rid themselves of this voice and instead give thanks for it. I have found that giving thanks, offering gratitude in ALL things (no picking and choosing) actually alters that critical voice. It no longer has any power and there is no thin skin in which to sink its talons. Gratitude alters ANY situation.

I spent a recent weekend at a Shamanic Journeying workshop. It had been over 20 years since my days in New Jersey attending Shamanic Journey training. I loved it then and it was exhilarating to reconnect with this powerful experience again. There are a multitude of scenarios that can occur during a journey; some of them making no sense whatsoever and only clarifying at some later point. It was during one of these recent journeys that I found my inner critic saying, “This is nonsense, you have better things to be doing.” “You really think this mojo works? You don’t have the patience or the fortitude for this kind of work.” Thankfully (there’s that gratitude!!), I had connected with a Spirit Guide who simply invited me to “just be grateful and move on.” I pictured my inner critic in a physical form, face to face and said “Thank you. I am grateful for what you say, but it is not the truth.” Pffft…the physical form of my inner critic was gone in an instant. After that experience (which was early on in the weekend), my journeys and training were immensely powerful and healing.

Negative energy in any form cannot sustain itself in the face of gratitude. Remember that. Gratitude in ALL things.

I teach Nia. In and of itself, Nia is transformative. Transformative movement. Shamanic Journeying is transformative. Combining the two for my own personal Nia practice is an exciting prospect.

My Nia classes will continue to be pure Nia, and as I mentioned before, Nia is transformative movement. The intention and motivation for one’s Nia practice is key. There are a plethora of benefits for doing Nia: fun, weight loss, muscle toning, releasing and relieving stress, focus, emotional balance, self-esteem, self-confidence, more strength, more stability, more flexibility, more agility, more mobility…and the list goes on.

Come and dance with me. Experience your own personal transformative journey with Nia. Your inner critic will tag along I’m sure, but give it no energy except for gratitude. Your inner critic has no power in the face of gratitude and joy.

DANCE, MOVE, CREATE CHANGE, EXPRESS SPIRIT!!!

Being Me

Image

I’ve loved this photo from the first day I saw it.  That would be me hanging upside down during a ballet class.  I never took any ballet classes when I was little.  First, we didn’t have the money and second, my mom knew me well enough to know I could never pay attention long enough to get through a class with such a structured environment.  Back when I was growing up there was no ADHD or ADD given as a diagnosis.  I was just me being me.  Rebellious.  Sassy.  A potty mouth — descriptions of me being me then and I would say those same descriptions hold true for me now — I would add “Real” though.  Rebellious. Sassy.  Potty Mouth.  Real.  Me being me.  Gratitude for all things they say.  I am definitely grateful to be me.

How about you?  Are you being you or are you being someone you think you’re supposed to be — for someone else?  I did that stint, too.  “Me being me” took a back seat for several years; the “me thinking I needed to be what someone else thought I should be” taking front and center stage.  Whew, am I ever glad that era is over.

It took a good friend, a group of wonderfully spiritually-oriented people, and a greeting card to get me back on track.  The good friend remained steadfast through the many alliterations of me and continues to be a life force friend to this day; the group of people are still around, too, only dispersed throughout the world these days (each of us knowing we could call on one another and we’d be there in a heartbeat); and the greeting card that arrived in the mail one day.  All that was handwritten inside were three words, “Where Are You?”

Those three words changed my life.  I made an about-face; made the lifestyle changes required for me to begin being me again and voila’.  I am here.  Me being me.

The invitation is always present.  Where Are You?  May I have this dance?
